1990s vs 2010s Transmission Claim Rates

**1995–1999** transmission sale cohort shows **16.3%** matched claims vs **2010–2014** at **11.1%**. Older MY mixes higher mileage and longer install histories — early **500-mile setup** still drives many reviews.

| Model year cohort | Matched claim rate (approx.) | |-------------------|------------------------------| | **1995–1999** | **16.3%** | | **2010–2014** | **11.1%** | | Gap | ~5 pts higher on oldest cohort |

Partially — but **fluid, cooler, relearn, and documentation** remain the top levers in 0–500 mile window: /blog/drivetrain-claims-first-500-miles-after-install.

| Risk signal | Likely cause (non-defect) | Document first | |-------------|---------------------------|----------------| | No shift / limp mode | Fluid level, relearn, TCM | Scan + fluid photo | | Slip / shudder | Converter, cooler flow, low fluid | Road-test notes + scan | | Leak at line or pan | Seal, fitting, overfill | Photo **before** cleanup | | Delayed engagement | Filter, wrong fluid spec | Fluid type receipt | | Codes after tow / flatbed | Low voltage, incomplete relearn | Battery + relearn proof |

| Lever | Transmission | Engine | |-------|--------------|--------| | Fluid / prime | Correct ATF, level, leaks | Oil prime, spec, filter | | Programming | Relearn / TCM | Immobilizer, crank relearn | | Cooling | Cooler flow, lines | Thermostat, bleed, fans | | Documentation | Photos, scan baseline | Timing proof, torque specs |

| Step | Action | |------|--------| | 1 | Document symptom, miles since install, fluid level and color | | 2 | Save full scan report (stored + pending codes) | | 3 | Photo leaks, cooler lines, and routing **before** cleanup | | 4 | Confirm relearn/reflash or programming steps completed | | 5 | Do **not** remove or disassemble the unit without pre-authorization |
